Who knows Johnny R.? is a German-Spanish western from 1966 that was shot in the style of the Karl May films . Old Shatterhand star Lex Barker and Wallace film star Joachim Fuchsberger can be seen in the leading roles .

action

Nobody ever saw the face of legendary gunslinger and bandit Johnny Ringo. He's terrorizing Arizona with his gang. The sheriff of Tombstone sent a pack on him, but with the help of his beloved Bea, Johnny, who is holed up on Captain Conroy's farm, can escape as so often. Meanwhile, Conroy's wife and child were helpless and tied up at the mercy of events; they perish in the fire that allegedly also kills Johnny Ringo - his ring is found on the finger of a cremated corpse.

Conroy, since he doesn't believe in Johnny's death, goes in search of him. After two years with no results, he hires detective Sam Dobie (on the recommendation of banker Jenkins). Dobie is supposed to find Johnny: a man pulling left with burns on his body. Well paid, Dobie lets Cathy Carmichael work as an arms seller and meets the brilliant gunman Clyde Smith - who pulls to the left. Dobie does good business with Smith as a salesman and marksman. But rumors soon spread that Smith was Ringo. At first, Smith doesn't think that's a bad thing, as it gives him chances with Cathy, who is in love with Dobie.

Because of the suspicions, Captain Conroy and Bea arrive in Redsville, where Dobie and Smith are staying. Bea immediately recognizes Dobie as Johnny Ringo, who can turn all guesses on Smith. Conroy and his men beat Smith half to death and want to set fire to the barn they dragged him into. At the last moment Dobie, who finally reveals himself to be real Johnny Ringo, is able to save him, but is himself fatally hit by a bullet.

Remarks

Lex Barker and Joachim Fuchsberger are playing together in a film for the first time. Fuchsberger was originally intended for three Karl May films (The bluish red Methuselah, Trapper Vulture's Beak, Winnetou and Captain Kaiman). Barker was supposed to play in the Edgar Wallace film The Curse of the Yellow Snake , but had to cancel for scheduling reasons, so Fuchsberger got the role.

The film was shot in the CCC studios in Berlin-Spandau as well as in various locations in Spain , including Calatayud , Fraga and Montserrat . The first performance in Germany was on 19 May 1966 in Spain on March 30, 1968. The film was later under the title 5000 $ for the head of Johnny R. revived.

The song The Ballad of Johnny Ringo is sung by Ralf Wolter .

criticism

The reviews were not very enthusiastic, but not entirely negative either. The lexicon of international film saw a “technically below average, unbelievable Euro-Western on the trail of the Karl May films” and the film watcher saw a “failed mixture of crime film and westerns, whose weaknesses are already in the illogical script are justified, but are reinforced by incorrect appointments and poor design. Not to be recommended to anyone. "
