Werner Arnold (mining engineer)

Werner Arnold (born June 1, 1920 in Nerchau ; † April 11, 2000 in Freiberg ) was a German mining engineer and university professor.

Arnold graduated from high school in 1939, did his Reich Labor Service and served in World War II from 1940 . He studied mining for one semester at the Bergakademie Freiberg and worked as a miner in Böhlen and Zwickau after the end of the war . In 1946 he continued his studies, in 1950 he obtained his diploma. He then worked as a Steiger in the VEB Schachtbau Nordhausen and joined the National Democratic Party of Germany . From July 1951 he worked as a clerk in the VEB Schachtbau, Verfestigungen und Waterproofing Leipzig . In 1953 he became production manager at VEB Schachtbau Nordhausen, and in 1961 he became technical director.

On March 17, 1953, Werner Arnold received his doctorate from the Freiberg Bergakademie as Dr.-Ing. In December 1961 he returned to the Bergakademie, where he became professor of mining and deep drilling technology. From March 1962, he headed this field and the Institute for Deep Drilling Technology and Oil Extraction. From 1963 he worked as dean of the Faculty of Mining. After the third university reform , Werner Arnold became dean of the faculty for technical sciences in 1969, and his professorship was rededicated to a full professorship for deep drilling technology, natural gas and oil production. He retired on September 1, 1985.

Werner Arnold died on April 11, 2000 in Freiberg. His grave is in the Donatsfriedhof . In June 2000, an honorary colloquium was held for him at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg on the occasion of his 80th birthday. On November 28, 2003, the building of the Institute for Drilling Technology and Fluid Mining at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg was named "Werner-Arnold-Bau".
