life and career

education

Branz learned photography in his father's photo studio, who was a respected landscape photographer in Austria. After his master's examination, he went to Bad Ischl in 1978 to join Austria's most renowned portrait photographer, Hugo Hofer, who became aware of the young Branz's work. From there he moved to Los Angeles where he worked at Monte Zucker .

photography

After his return home, he opened a photo studio in which he photographed commercially (photos of children, weddings, baptisms, portraits) but also artistically. Soon he was drawn on, out into the world, it elicited the talent to bring wisdom into his pictures, he learned by doing, by experimenting and inventing his unmistakable style, inspired by the irrepressible addiction to aesthetics, that makes him an exception. Branz works without borders in the USA, Europe, the Far / Middle East and Australia.

Branz as a freelance artist

Branz is extraordinarily versatile in his work, from nudes to landscapes , still lifes to architecture . His pictures are created in his imagination and are already finished before he presses the shutter release. The old school of photography also benefits him in the digital world, and in-depth knowledge of light and printing techniques give his photographs a special depth.

In the 1990s he visited Arles regularly , where he exhibited at Café Van Gogh next to Peter Lindbergh , Helmut Newton and Richard Avedon . In addition to the exhibition, he also held highly regarded seminars here.

Werner Branz produces and provokes. His works are international ambassadors of his world: Cologne, Dubai, Abu Dabi, Arles, Vienna, Singapore, Ibiza, Paris, Las Vegas, Norway, Dubai, New York, Miami, Sydney, San Francisco, but also in his home in Rankweil, Bregenz, Feldkirch, Lindau and Vaduz.

His works can now be found in the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg , the Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney , and the Museum Angerlehner .

From the mid to late 1990s, Branz gave masterclass courses to professional colleagues in Norway , Denmark , Germany , the USA and France .

Fashion and design

Werner Branz's work has been published in Vogue Paris , Rolling Stone and Photography magazines, among others . He photographed campaigns and a. for Yves Saint Laurent , Versace , Dolce & Gabbana , Miss Sixty , DKNY and many more.

Lenny Kravitz, Sting, Elton John, Rod Steward, Pino Sagliocco, Sheikh Faisal bin Khalid Al Quasimi let Branz portray them.

techniques

Branz uses fine printing processes such as bromine oil printing , mainly for nudes, which gives the obscure painterly characterization. In his earlier creative periods he photographed on Polaroid in large formats and implemented them with positive transfer and negative transfer . Playing with the original processes continues to inspire him to this day and has remained part of his work. He loves the changeable, the dualism and the divergence, that is the sophistication, in his body studies, portraits, flower and landscape pictures, printed on canvas, photo and handmade paper.
