Werner Rebhuhn (born May 1, 1922 in Göttingen ; † January 23, 2001 in Hamburg ) was a German graphic designer and artist who worked for publishers Rowohlt , Piper , S. Fischer , Ullstein and Hoffmann and Campe , among others . As a book designer with an art history training in the tradition of Emil Preetorius or Emil Rudolf Weiß , he had profound knowledge of typography , coloring and cover design.

Biography and work

Rebhuhn studied graphics from 1940 to 1944 at the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg under Carl Otto Czeschka and illustrated books for the Hanseatic publishing house from 1943 to 1950. In 1946 he designed the title for one of the first RoRoRo editions to be printed in newspaper format: Ernest Hemingway's In Another Land .

Most of Rebhuhn's works were created for Rowohlt Verlag from 1959, for example for works by CW Ceram , DH Lawrence , Ernest Hemingway , Henry Miller , Vladimir Nabokov and Jean-Paul Sartre ; Rebhuhn also designed numerous paperback covers and the first design of the rowohlts monographs .

Rebhuhn was also active as a font designer: In 1953 the script font "Fox" was created, two years later the "Hobby" for the type foundry Genzsch & Heyse.

He lived for a long time in the south of the Hamburg district of Hausbruch .
