Werner Schild

Werner Schild (born February 23, 1924 ) is a former German soccer player . He played for Hamburger SV shortly after the end of World War II, and with this he became champion of the British occupation zone in 1947. He later belonged to the squad of Meidericher SV in the Oberliga West .

Career

Post-war years in Hamburg and Remscheid (1946–1952)

Schild was accepted into the first team of Hamburger SV in 1946 at the age of 22 . Shortly after the end of the Second World War, there was only one Hamburg city league in which his team took second place in the table behind FC St. Pauli , although the player himself had only been used in four matches and had scored one goal. This entitled to participation in the British Zone Championship , which HSV won in 1947; however, a final round of the all-German championship was not held.

For the new 1947/48 season, the Oberliga Nord, a top division for all north German clubs, was introduced. On September 14, 1947 he was on the pitch in the 3-1 opening win of HSV against Bremer SV , but was then completely ousted from the first team and only called up once in the further course of the season. With a win in the playoff against FC St. Pauli, his team became the first champions of the Oberliga Nord. As such, the club was also allowed to take part in the final round of the German championship in 1948 and met TuS Neuendorf in July 1948 . Schild was considered again and used as left winger, but had to accept a 1: 2 defeat of his team. In the same year he left HSV and some time later joined the VfB Marathon Remscheid . There he met again with his twin brother Gerhard Schild , who had also played at HSV and then at Eintracht Frankfurt . With Remscheid, the brothers played in the 2nd League West , i.e. the next higher class behind the Oberliga, and Werner remained part of the team until 1952. In the 1951/52 season, the VfB Marathon was only able to hold its own in the second division due to a restructuring of the second division and the associated high number of relegation places thanks to its good goal difference. Meanwhile, Gerhard, the brother, landed at Motor Nordhausen .

Oberliga West in Meiderich (1952–1954)

For the 1952/53 season, Schild was obliged by Meidericher SV , which this year had not strengthened itself to a large extent and continued to rely on proven players such as Karl Hetzel , Kurt Neumann , Hans Krämer or Heinrich Kreienberg . The MSV was one of the clubs of the Oberliga West , which represented the top division in the west of the Federal Republic. Initially, Schild was not called up as a substitute until he moved into the Meiderich attack line on November 23, 1952 instead of the previously set Ferdinand Mühlenberg and made his debut in the Oberliga West in a 4-2 win against Preußen Münster . In the following period he also took a regular place in the then five-player storm alongside Karl Hetzel, Hans Krämer, Kurt Nolden and Paul Hufnagel . Meiderich had a mediocre start to the season, but fought his way up to the top of the table until the turn of the year, thanks in particular to the goals from Karl Hetzel. Schild did not give up his place in the first eleven, scored three goals himself and finished fourth with his team.

During the 1953/54 season he lost his regular seat again, as Franz Trapphoff and Ferdinand Mühlenberg, who had previously been ousted by him, proved to be competitors. When Hetzel had to take a break due to an injury, Gerd Schönknecht , a trained defender , was even summoned into the storm. Especially towards the end of the season, Schild played again, but he left the MSV in the summer of 1954. The then 30-year-old had a total of 30 league games with four goals in the "Zebras" jersey.
