Werner Stein (sculptor)
Ludwig Wilhelm Werner Stein (born January 10, 1855 in Braunschweig , † January 18, 1930 in Streitwald near Frohburg ) was a German sculptor .
Life
He was the son of a Braunschweig basket maker . His training took place from 1873 to 1875 at the Nuremberg School of Applied Arts under Melchior zur Strasse and from 1875 to 1879 under Johannes Schilling in Dresden . As his pupil he was involved in the execution of the Niederwald monument . As early as 1879 he received a professorship as a teacher for modeling at the Leipzig trade school .
In 1881 Stein married Elisabeth Schwenk (1861–1940) in Dresden. The marriage remained childless.
In 1902 he bought a farm in Kohrener Land , to which he retired in old age in order to spend his old age with extensive hikes, local history research and sculpture. Werner Stein died surprisingly a few days after his 75th birthday and was buried on January 19, 1930 in the cemetery in Greifenhain . According to a testamentary order, the Werner Stein Foundation was established by the Leipzig Artists' Association to support destitute Leipzig art students. Stein was the long-time chairman of the Leipzig Artists' Association.
