Location of Weselerwald in North Rhine-Westphalia

Weselerwald is a district of the municipality Schermbeck in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Wesel .

Geographical location

Weselerwald is ten kilometers northwest of the core town of Schermbeck on Landesstrasse  401 and Kreisstrasse  25. The district is bounded to the west and north by Brünen and Marienthal , to the east by Dusk Forest and to the south by Damm and the Hünxer district of Drevenack . The entire local area is part of the Hohe Mark-Westmünsterland Nature Park . Weselerwald is originally not a settlement but a forest name. The district includes the places Voshövel and Lühlerheim in the Lühlerheide, where the Rhenish Evangelical workers' colony is located .

history

The farm "Wisele" (today Weselerwald) was first mentioned in a document from 1122. In earlier times, the parishes of Wesel , Hamminkeln and Drevenack were involved in the Weselerwald . The so-called Holzgrafschaft owned the Counts of Cleves . In the years 1884 to 1886, the Lühlerheim workers' colony was built by 19 colonists under the direction of Pastor Stursberg. In 1912, the Lühlerheim Evangelical Chapel designed by the government architect Karl Neuhaus was inaugurated.

In the Weselerwald, in the middle of a meadow made of northern granite, lies the legendary Devil's Stone. How the fir-high stone got there is still unclear. Presumably it is a holdover from the Ice Age. Until the end of 1974 Weselerwald was an independent municipality in the Schermbeck district, Rees district . On January 1, 1975, the municipalities of Schermbeck, Altschermbeck, Bricht, Damm, Dämmerwald, Gahlen, Overbeck and Weselerwald merged to form the municipality of Schermbeck as part of the regional reform in North Rhine-Westphalia .
