Inscription (new) Weserstein

The Weserstein or Wesersteine denote two memorial stones that were erected in the southern Lower Saxony district of Göttingen ( Germany ) in Hann. Münden on the 116.5  m above sea level. NHN located confluence of the Werra and Fulda to the Weser . You are at the north end of the Tanzwerder called Weserspitze , a two-part river island mainly located in the Fulda .

Beyond the Weser origin is high above the opposite river bank on the slope of Quest Bergs the Weserlied system .

Old Weserstein

The (old) Weserstein is a memorial stone that was inaugurated on September 2, 1899 and indicates the beginning of the Weser . The then symbolic date of Sedan Day fits the patriotic fourth line of the inscription:

Where Werra and Fulda kiss
They have to pay for their names
And here arises from this kiss
German to the sea of the Weser river.
Hann. Münden, d. July 31, 1899

The stone (local tertiary - freshwater quartzite ) was donated by the then Mündener industrialist Carl Natermann senior (see Haendler & Natermann ), whose son Carl Natermann junior wrote the inscription. The stone, which weighs around 70  quintals, comes from the Kaufunger Forest near the cattle stall game reserve . The chestnut next to the Weserstein was planted in 1879 by the local beautification association.

New Weserstein

A few meters from the (old) Weserstein , the (new) Weserstein was set up as a contemporary counterpart in 2000 in connection with the EXPO 2000 . The inscription was written by Nedko Solakov , an artist from Bulgaria ; he makes ironic and humorous stories about Fulda, Werra and Weser:

The disappointed river

My dear hiker, please have a look at the Fulda (on your left).
Doesn't she seem somehow disappointed, even unhappy, when you see her water
flowing so tired? Yes, it is too and I'll tell you why.

It so happened that her beloved letters F, U, L, D and A were completely neglected when they merged with WERRA. As you can see, these letters are missing in the new name of the river: WESER. Poor FULDA was only allowed to appear as a representative in the new word, so she chose the letter S. This S replaced one of the two R's of the WERRA. Why that? The curves in the S reminded the wistful letters F, U, L and D of the lovely curves at the source of the FULDA. Where these letters are still lively brooks. The sensitive FULDA felt that fate had treated herself unfairly; she had worked so hard all these centuries - apparently for nothing and again for nothing. In order to at least get her peace of mind, she began to help the traders. The traders had to pay terrible stacking rights and high taxes for goods and goods that they brought to the city of Hann. Münden brought. Incidentally, these terrible taxes were used to build elegant houses on the banks of the competitor WERRA. So FULDA decided to smuggle some goods over their waters - a small but silent act of retaliation.

The two A's from FULDA and WERRA were also very dissatisfied with the merger. Imagine that! The first letter in the alphabet is passed over in such a brutal way! However, the A's received a small compensation. An agreement was made and now they appear at the beginning in the name of a beautiful German city, somewhere in the west ...
