Wesley Savill (born August 22, 1989 in Calgary , Alberta ) is a former Canadian Nordic combined skier and current ski jumping coach .

Career

Savill, who started for the Altius Nordic Ski Club, made his international debut in July 2004 at an FIS ski jumping competition in Park City . In the Nordic Combined, he faced the international competition for the first time in mid-December 2005 at the B-World Cup competition in Steamboat Springs , but was ranked 69th, far behind. As a result, he regularly competed in the second-rate B World Cup, but could not win any points record. At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2006 in Kranj , he finished 51st in the sprint and 59th in the special jumping from the normal hill. In addition, he was together with Gregory Baxter , Trevor Morrice and MacKenzie Boyd-Clowes eleventh in the team competition. In the two following years he only competed in Nordic Combined competitions at both the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2007 in Tarvisio and the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2008 in Zakopane , with his best placing 31st place in the individual after the Gundersen Method in Zakopane.

At the start of the 2008/09 winter season, Savill reached fifteenth place in the Continental Cup in Park City and thus won his first points at this level. On 16 January 2009 he made his debut in the domestic Vancouver in the World Cup , but missed with the ranks 37 and 32 just under the points. At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2009 in Štrbské Pleso he was seventeenth in the Gundersen singles. Two weeks later, Savill was part of the Canadian squad at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 , but remained far behind the world's best. In the following years Savill tried again and again unsuccessfully in the World Cup and was only able to advance into the top thirty in the Continental Cup in isolated cases. He achieved his best career result at the end of January 2011 with tenth place in the Continental Cup race in Harrachov . About a month later he took part in the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2011 in Oslo , where he finished 41st on the normal hill and 43rd on the large hill in the Gundersen Singles.

In the summer of 2012, Savill competed in the Grand Prix and was able to achieve the points on both days of the competition in Sochi . In the further course he could not confirm these results, but fell far behind the best athletes. The twentieth place in the team sprint together with Nathaniel Mah also revealed the weaknesses of the Canadian team. After he still failed to collect his first World Cup points in the following years, Savill ended his career in 2016. At the national level, he had won several championship titles.

In January 2015, Savill took over the post of head coach at his hometown club Altuis Nordic SC. Savill, who was trained at Canada Olympic Park himself , opposed the closure of the ski jumping facility.

Savill studied Kinesiology and Human Sciences at Athabasca University in Athabasca .
