The Westertor is a city gate of the Upper Swabian city of Memmingen in Bavaria . It stands on the west side of the old town between the dungeon tower and the Lindauer Tor .

Appearance

Its appearance goes back to the shelling of the imperial in the Thirty Years War . Back then it looked similar to the Ulmer and Kempter Tor today . An octagonal building sits on the rectangular substructure, similar to that of the St. Martin's Tower. A Welsche hood forms the end . Inside and outside there is a small shield in the form of a coat of arms with the imperial eagle and the double city coat of arms.

history

The story of the West Gate begins when Memmingen became a town . It was built around 1150 and replaced by a high saddle roof gate in the 14th century . After the bombardment by the imperial troops in the Thirty Years War, it was renewed in 1648. In 1660 it was rebuilt in its present form.
