Canal and bascule bridge in Westgroßefehn.

Westgroßefehn is a district of the community Großefehn and the nucleus of the village Großefehn, which today consists of Westgroßefehn, Mittegroßefehn and Ostgroßefehn .

history

The place is the oldest fencing system in East Friesland . It was created as Timmelerfehn in 1633 by the four citizens of Emden, Claas Berends, Simon Thebes, Cornelius de Rekener and Gerd Lammer . They received a moorland for peat and cultivation from the Prince of East Friesland in Obererbpacht and divided the moorland into 2 to 3 hectares large plots, which were given to colonists in sublease . They undertook to dig a canal, dig up the peat and cultivate the subsoil. The main channel, which served as a traffic route, was driven from the Fehntjer Tief into the moor. The colonists built their houses on both sides of the canal. Westgroßefehn then developed out of peat shipping as a shipyard location, where mainly Tjalken were built.

On July 1, 1972, the place was incorporated into the new community of Großefehn.

Attractions

The typical fen landscape is well preserved in Westgroßefehn. The core of the village is still the central canal. The two-storey gallery Dutch windmill built towards the end of the 19th century also characterizes the townscape.

The Fehnmuseum Eiland documents the origins and development of the Fehndorf. In the tea room, the museum offers the East Frisian tea ceremony for visitors. There is also a frame saw and a forge on the historical museum grounds, which are used regularly.

The history of weaving is shown in the weaving museum , which has been located in the old village school since 1999. Supported by the non-profit association “De Weevstuv eV”, courses for participation are also offered in the museum workshop.

Events

Every year the traditional maypole celebration and the Easter bonfire take place in Westgroßefehn . These and other events are organized by the West-Mittegroßefehn / Ulbargen volunteer fire department.

From 2010 to 2012 the Omas Teich Festival also took place in Westgroßefehn. Residents had previously set up an interest group against the event, as they feared noise and pollution. However, they withdrew their lawsuit against approving the event.

The Großefehn Open Air is now taking place on the same site.
