Ulbargen is a place in the municipality of Großefehn in the Aurich district in East Friesland . The village of Ulbargerfeld, first recorded in 1871, belongs to the locality.

Location and geology

Ulbargen is located about twelve kilometers south of the district town of Aurich, directly on the federal highway 72 . The distance to the northern neighboring town Mittegroßefehn is about two and a half kilometers. The soil consists mainly of valley sand , underlain by earth moor , high moor and Gley - Podsol . Around 1719 Ulbargen consisted of 7 farms. According to tradition, a chief once lived here. The castle outside the village is said to have been named Üterborg. A street name still refers to the Üterborg today. Ulbargen was part of the parish of Timmel .

On July 1, 1972, Ulbargen was incorporated into the new community of Großefehn.

Development of the place name

The place is first mentioned as Vlberge as 1599 on the East Friesland map of the Ubbo Emmius . The name Ulbergen has been handed down from 1645 . The current spelling has been used since 1824. The name is interpreted as a combination of the term ul or ol (= swamp , moor ) and the Low German plural form of mountain. Ulbargen therefore stands for hills in the moor .
