Geology and geography

Originally, the 3.76 km² large local area was completely covered by moorland. Today these are completely peeled off. history

The history of Großefehn began in 1633, when the four Emden merchants Simon Thebes, Claas Behrends, Cornelius de Rekener and Gerd Lammers received permission from Count Ulrich II of East Frisia to clear the still uncultivated raised bog by creating fen canals based on the Dutch model. These served on the one hand to drain the moorland and on the other hand as a transport artery. Their banks were therefore an ideal settlement area for the colonists. For this purpose, the four Emder founded the Großefehn company (Großefehn company) as a company in which they held the shares. The first area to be cultivated covered an area of 400  diemat . The merchants received the land on a long lease and leased it to the colonists. Großefehn is thus the oldest fen colony in East Frisia based on this type.

The colony grew steadily as a result. This went hand in hand with the expansion of the Fehn Canal, which in 1760 reached today's federal road (the eastern border of the settlement area Mittegroßefehns), on which the first road in East Frisia from Leer to Aurich was built in the 1830s. The Wieke cut off in the east was connected with a ditch to the main canal and the new settlement area west of the Chaussee was assigned to the Ostgroßefehn community. In the second half of the 19th century, the place lost its fen character. During this time, a new center was built on Schrahörnstrasse, while the older, low-lying rows of settlements on Dwarsrack and Langerack were abandoned. Since 1868 Mittegroßefehn was a political municipality, which on July 1, 1972 in the municipality Großefehn .
