As western Hungary , the higher up the western half of the present state is Hungary referred. It has a hilly and mountainous character with the exception of the Little Hungarian Plain on the border with Austria and Slovakia.

In a broader sense

The following nine of Hungary's 19 counties (from west to east and north to south) belong to western Hungary, which makes up almost 40% of the country's area :

West Hungary also has some cities with county law:

In a narrow sense

The western half of the above-mentioned area is also referred to as western Hungary (geographically narrower, but not sharply defined). Until 1920, the German-speaking parts of today's Burgenland (Austria) also belonged to it, which was formed from parts of today's Győr-Moson-Sopron counties (see Wieselburg and Ödenburg ), Vas (formerly Eisenburg). This area (which was somewhat larger until 1918) was also called " German West Hungary " or " Heanzenland ".
