When the Night Begins ( 1995 ) is a Canadian film directed by Patricia Rozema about the love of a Christian teacher ( Pascale Bussières ) for a circus artist ( Rachael Crawford ).

action

Camille Baker and her partner Martin are teachers at a Christian college in a small town in Canada. They are offered to work together as deans , but to do that they would have to get married. While Martin is very fond of this idea, Camille has doubts. Shaken by the death of her dog, she meets a young woman named Petra in a laundry, who hardly tries to hide the fact that she feels drawn to Camille. Their clothes are exchanged, and so they will see each other again soon.

A cautious friendship grows, although Camille shrinks from the young circus artist's overt advances. She tries to cement her relationship with Martin, but when he goes away for a few days, she turns to Petra again. Petra's thirst for life and adventure sweeps Camille along when Petra takes her to hang-gliding. After a sudden fall, caused by Camille passing out in the air, the two women go to Camille's apartment. There Petra starts a tender attempt at seduction when suddenly the Reverend stands at the door and wants to speak to Camille. Completely disturbed and with a badly guilty conscience, she searches for a justification for Petra's presence. When Petra overhears in the other room how Camille describes her as "quite disturbed" while she brings the Reverend to the door, she secretly climbs out of the window and runs away. Camille follows her guiltily to the circus, where the two finally spend a passionate night together.

Timothy, the head of the circus , meanwhile has more and more arguments with his partner Tory, who wants a more orderly life. She repeatedly threatens to leave him.

Martin is now returning from his trip prematurely and follows in the footsteps of his girlfriend to the circus, where he sees the two women together. Shocked, he turns away and gives Camille an ultimatum. She is insecure and gets drunk. Then she takes her dead dog that she hid in the freezer and goes out into the cold night to bury him.

Some time later, two hang-gliders known to Petra find Camille drunk and half frozen in the snow. They call an ambulance and also Petra to help. She cuddles up to Camille while they wait for help, she prays and promises to love and honor her beloved and to stand by her in good and bad days. They go away together and rejoin the circus.

Tory eventually leaves Timothy and stays in town, where she soon meets the newly abandoned Martin. The two turn to each other while Camille's dog digs its way out of the ground in the snowy landscape near the city and runs away into the distance.

Reviews

  • “'When Night Is Falling' is poetic and kitsch, clichéd and complex, real and unreal at the same time. Like love itself. An adventurous and wonderful love film. ” - Süddeutsche Zeitung
  • Cinema magazine called the film a "homage to the sensuality of love" .
  • The lexicon of international films said: “The film tells its almost classic story of the awakening of sensuality in a somewhat mannered manner. Not a film of serious "questions, but a light, somewhat too routine staged variation on the subject of homosexuality."
