Viktor Alexandrowitsch Kabanow ( Russian Ви́ктор Алекса́ндрович Кабано́в ; born January 15, 1934 in Moscow ; † March 31, 2006 ibid) was a Russian chemist , polymer chemist and university professor .

Life

Kabanow, son of the physiologist Alexander Nikolajewitsch Kabanow , studied chemistry at the Lomonossow University Moscow (MGU) with a degree in 1956. He then worked as a research assistant at the chair for polymer chemistry under WA Kargin . In 1960 he was awarded a doctorate in chemical sciences and in 1966 a doctorate in chemical sciences . In 1968 he became a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR) . From 1970 he headed the chair for polymer chemistry at MGU. 1972–1977 he edited the Russian Encyclopedia of Polymers and, together with others, the Russian journal Polymers .

In 1975, Kabanov became Deputy Academy Secretary of the General and Technical Chemistry Section of the AN-SSSR. In 1987 he became a full member of the Academy. Since 1988 he has been a member of the Presidium of the AN-SSSR (since 1991 Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN)). From 1988–2002 he chaired the Scientific Council for Polymer Chemistry of the AN-SSSR / RAN. 1990–2006 he was editor-in-chief of the Negotiations of the Academy of Sciences . In 1991 he became Academy Secretary of the Section for General and Technical Chemistry at RAN and in 2002 Academy Secretary for the Section for Chemistry and Materials Science at RAN.

Kabanow was one of the world's leading polymer chemists. His main areas of work were the kinetics and the mechanism of polymerization , the interpolymer complexes and the polymer- electrolyte reactions, the modeling of biopolymers and the formation of biologically active polymer reagents (including artificial immunogens ), the polymer- metal complexes and the gel immobilized metal complex catalysts .

1986–1987 Kabanov and the staff of his chair participated in the work to limit the effects of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster . He developed a polymer material to prevent the spread of radioactive dust in the disaster area up to series production.

1977–1981 he was the first Russian President of the Macromolecules Section of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry . He became a foreign member of the Belgian Academy of Sciences in 1989 , a member of the Academia Europaea in 1991 and a foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in 2002 .

Kabanov's grave is in Moscow's Novodevichy Cemetery . He was married to the Bolshoi Theater - ballerina AA Nersesova. Her son is the chemist Alexander Viktorovich Kabanov .
