Viktor Evgenjewitsch Golant ( Russian Виктор Евгеньевич Голант ; born January 14, 1928 in Leningrad ; † October 18, 2008 ) was a Russian physicist and university professor .

Life

Golant was the son of the educator Yevgeny Jakowlewitsch Golant and nephew of the psychiatrist Raisa Jakowlewna Golant . After graduating from school, Golant studied at the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute (LPI), graduating in 1950. He then worked in Leningrad in the Svetlana design office for electronic equipment construction and then at the LPI.

In 1961 Golant became a research assistant at the Physics and Technology Institute (FTI) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR, since 1991 Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN)) in Leningrad . In 1964 he received his doctorate in physical-mathematical sciences . In 1970 he became director of the Department of Plasma Physics , Atomic Physics and Astrophysics . He also taught at the LPI, where he was appointed professor .

Golant's main focus was on plasma diagnostics, the interactions of high-frequency electrical waves with plasmas, plasma heating methods in the tokamak and particle and energy transfer processes. In the FTI he organized the laboratory for high-temperature plasmas, in which problems of controlling thermonuclear reactions were investigated. Some tokamaks were constructed and successfully operated under Golant's direction. In 1999 the first Russian spherical tokamak Globus-M was built.

Golant became a corresponding member of the AN-SSSR in 1984 and a full member of the RAN in 1991. Golant was a member of the Presidium of the St. Petersburg Science Center of the RAN. He has authored more than 200 publications, including the monographs on the basics of plasma physics and microwave methods for plasma studies.

Golant's name bears the asteroid (5156) Golant, discovered by Tamara Mikhailovna Smirnova in 1972 .
