Wiktor Wiktorowitsch Tschirkow ( Russian Ви́ктор Ви́кторович Чирко́в ; born September 8, 1959 in Alma-Ata , Kazakh SSR ) is a Russian admiral . He was commander in chief of the Russian naval fleet from 2012 to 2016 .

Life

Tschirkow graduated from the Pacific Naval Officer College SO Makarow in Vladivostok in 1982 and subsequently served in the Pacific Fleet as commander of the mine-torpedo combat section (GA-3). Later he was chief officer on the watch ship Lun and the destroyer Wosbuschdjonny . From 1987 Tschirkow commanded the guard ship Storoschewoj and attended special officer courses of the Navy until 1988. In 1990 he became commander of the destroyer Admiral Spiridonov , 1993 Deputy Chief of Staff of a ship division and commander of the 44th U-hunting - Brigade in Vladivostok. After Chirkov graduated from the Naval War Academy NG Kuznetsov in 1997 and the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces in 2000 , he became Chief of Staff of the Group of Northeastern Troops and Armed Forces of Russia . From 2005 he led the Primorsk Flotilla of the Pacific Fleet, became 1st Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of the Baltic Fleet in 2007 and, on the order of the Russian President on September 8, 2009, its commander.

On May 6, 2012, he was appointed commander-in-chief of the Russian naval fleet by order of President Medvedev and promoted to admiral on August 9, 2012. In March 2016, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation announced that Chirkov was stepping down from his post for health reasons. His successor was Vladimir Korolev .

Tschirkow is married and has two sons.
