Wildling is a fantasy horror film by Fritz Böhm that premiered on March 10, 2018 at the South by Southwest Film Festival. The film tells of Anna, who spent her entire childhood in the care of a mysterious man who scared her "outside" with terrible stories until she was freed by Sheriff Ellen Cooper at the age of 16.

action

Young Anna spent her entire childhood in a single room in the care of a mysterious man whom she only knows as "Daddy". He scares her with terrible stories of the "outside". By telling her about the "wildling", a creature with sharp teeth and claws that eats young children, he wants to make her fear the outside world. However, Anna doesn't know that she herself is the monster.

When Anna was 16 years old, she was rescued by Sheriff Ellen Cooper, with whom she found temporary accommodation. Ellen lives in the house with her brother Ray, who is also a teenager. For the first time in her life, Anna experiences something other than her room in the attic. So far, she has only known the world through the look through her barred window and from Daddy's perspective, but soon she learns that there is no such thing as the wildling. As the young woman begins to blossom, a number of disturbing events take place.

Staff and cast

Bel Powley , pictured here shortly before shooting at the premiere of The Diary of a Teenage Girl , plays Anna in the film

The film was produced by Maven Entertainment and co-produced by Arri Media GmbH and the Swedish Film i Väst and Filmgate Films. Fritz Böhm , born in Berlin , directed. It is the directorial debut of the actual production manager and film producer. He wrote the script together with Florian Eder . Fairy tales, especially those that Böhm heard as a child, had a great influence on his work and thus produced the “misunderstood creature” that gave the film its name, according to the director. In German, Wildling refers to overgrown cultures of plants and animals, whereas in the English-speaking world, Wildlings are particularly known as a fictional population group in the fantasy saga The Song of Ice and Fire and its television adaptation Game of Thrones .

During the premiere of the film at the South by Southwest Film Festival, Böhm said in a conversation with Jonathan Barkan from Dread Central that most of the creatures in monster films are male, and Anna wanted to cast this role female. In the film, which focuses on women, the viewer should take Anna's perspective, who has hardly any experience with the outside world, and moves in it almost like an animal with the help of her instincts, just as we humans move through the world driven by instincts. The viewer should perceive this world through their ears and eyes. His figure of the wildling is indeed inspired by werewolves, but comes from its own mythology. When they are born, they look like normal people, according to Böhm, only in their puberty did their secondary characteristics manifest themselves, which means that they develop differently than young women usually do.

Bel Powley took on the lead role from Anna. Brad Dourif plays the man she only knows as "Daddy". Liv Tyler plays Sheriff Ellen Cooper, Collin Kelly-Sordelet her brother Ray, who, like Anna, is also a teenager.

Filming and film music

The shooting took place in the US state of New York, in the small town of Congers, and lasted 23 days. As a cameraman acted Toby Oliver , who previously in this capacity for horror movies Get Out and Happy Deathday worked. Böhm worked with production designer Lauren Fitzsimmons on the equipment .

The film music was composed by the Austrian Paul Haslinger . The soundtrack for the film, which includes 20 pieces of music, was released for download by Filmtrax on April 13, 2018. For To The Northern Lights , the last piece of the soundtrack, Haslinger worked with composer Martina Eisenreich together.

Marketing and Publishing

Before the premiere of the film on March 10, 2018 at the South by Southwest Film Festival, IFC Midnight secured the rights to the film. At the same time, a first trailer for the film was released. The film was released in select US cinemas on April 13, 2018 and in UK theaters on April 20, 2018. In September 2018 the film was shown as part of the Fantasy Film Festival .

reception

So far, the film has received a rather positive rating from 71 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics .

Justin Lowe of The Hollywood Reporter says the Brothers Grimm, Roald Dahl and other dark fairy tale and fantasy sources cast a long and benevolent shadow on Wildling . Fritz Böhm and Florian Eder recognized the wild origins of civilization in the film and established the canon of horror archetypes, even if the film for Lowe is more of a twisted thriller than a horror film.

Meredith Borders of slashfilm.com says Wildsling was developing increasingly becoming a film about growing up when Anna, a wide-eyed young woman one looks, how it moves through the delicate area of sexual youth, with a dark, supernatural element, the thing make it even more complicated. Bel Powley appears with her childlike, otherworldly beauty and her delicate movements as vulnerable as a newborn fawn, according to Borders. Together with Liv Tyler , she forms a beautiful couple, and in the role of Sheriff Cooper, her innate warmth creates a protective aura around the girl who has been through so much and needs and deserves the love of a mother figure after her pathetic treatment of Daddy. As nice as this story about the importance of the cohesion of the two women and Anna's path from child to woman is, Wildling is still a monster film that goes to some very strange and creepy places and which is never filled with blood, violence or shy away from sex, according to Borders. In addition, Wildling is also a film that focuses on fathers' fear of the sexuality of their daughters, and what they do to keep their little girls small forever.

Trace Thurman from bloody-disgusting.com calls the film remarkably successful. Wildling is essentially a modern fairy tale, and thanks to the work of cameraman Toby Oliver using the blue and gray color palettes, the film really does look like a live-action fairy tale, albeit a very bloody one. It is also nice to see that Tyler has returned to the horror genre after her role in The Strangers 10 years earlier, according to Thurman, and the scenes in the film in which she plays Ellen as a mother-like character for Anna are heartwarming .

Jonathan Barkan of Dread Central says Wildling is taking the traditional werewolf transformation mechanism and using that as the foundation for a more direct and relatable story.
