action

The student Theresa "Tree" Gelbman is murdered on her birthday by an unknown, masked person. However, the next morning she wakes up like nothing has happened, only to find out that she is in a time warp . It's her birthday again and she is murdered again. So she lives through the day of her death every day and has to try to stay away from her killer.

Tree grasps this time warp after experiencing the same day twice. On the third day, she literally knows dialogues before they are spoken, knows when sprinklers go off and that there is a surprise party for her birthday in the evening. However, she is so disturbed that she freaks out. She confides in her roommate Lori, but she doesn't believe her. When Tree dies again, she confides in Carter in the morning, with whom she wakes up every day. Despite his skepticism, he believes her and suggests that a list of suspects be drawn up, which the two of them do together. Tree spends the next repetitive days following suspects as Carter realizes that the killer deliberately chose Tree's birthday for her death. But neither her ex-boyfriend Tim, her professor, with whom she is having an affair, nor his wife Stephanie are the killer. Tree is killed in different scenarios while following these people. Finally, she escapes from the murderer in a car, who catches up with her after a police check and kills her again. If necessary, the murderer also kills people in the vicinity of Trees in order to enable them to be murdered.

After Tree failed to find her killer again, she confides in Carter again in the morning. After initial skepticism, he believes her again and tries to find a solution. The two go out to eat together and get to know each other better, exchange experiences with family problems. Tree mentions how much she misses her mother, who had her birthday on the same day, but who died in an accident. Tree ignores her father's calls throughout the day. She also notices that she is getting weaker and weaker physically.

On the news, Tree learns of an escaped mass murderer being treated at the nearby hospital. Tree now suspects him to be her killer and confronts him in the hospital, where he has already shot a policeman and disguised himself as a baby face. Carter can initially protect Tree, but is killed himself. Tree manages to injure the killer, but realizes that if she doesn't start the day again, Carter will be dead. So she finally kills herself and starts a new day, purposefully with the will to stop the killer. She realizes that she is inclined to Carter and ends the affair with her professor. She meets her father, where they both speak out and talk about the death of the mother.

Tree goes to the hospital in the evening and threatens the police officer who was supposed to be guarding the mass murderer in the hospital, but only to get his weapon. When Tree tries to shoot her killer, she forgets to put the safety on the gun and is overwhelmed and seriously injured. In the end, she uses what she has learned over the past 16 days and shoots the killer.

In the evening she sits with Carter in her room and is happy about the homemade cupcake her roommate Lori has made and wishes a new morning.

The morning comes too, but the loop starts again. Tree concludes that she thought the wrong killer was hers. Receiving the cupcake again, she deduces that she died last night from the cupcake that was poisoned. So Lori is the murderer. The reason turns out to be that she works as a nurse in the hospital and has developed feelings for the doctor, who however preferred an affair with Tree. Tree can end up throwing her out the window in self-defense.

Tree later sits in a cafe with Carter while a report about Lori is on TV. Carter mentions the movie " Groundhog Day ", which is also about a time warp. Tree doesn't know the movie, however. When Tree wakes up the next morning, everything seems to repeat itself again, but this time it was just a prank by Carter. It's the next day and finally it's not Tree's birthday anymore. You and Carter kiss.
