Wilhelm Breuning

Wilhelm Breuning (born May 15, 1920 in Sobernheim ; † May 19, 2016 ) was a German Catholic theologian , dogmatist and prelate .

Life

Breuning studied Catholic theology from 1938 to 1949 at the University of Trier and at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . From 1941 to 1945 he was committed to military service. He was ordained priest on August 1, 1948 in Trier . He was from 1949 to 1951 in teaching at high school in Bernkastel-Kues worked and acquired in 1952 the licentiate in theology at the rebuilt Theological Faculty of Trier . In 1954, he was with a thesis on the original justice, fall and original sin after the Dominican Ulrich of Strasbourg to Dr. theol. PhD . After studying in Rome from 1954 to 1957 , he completed his habilitation in Trier with a paper on Christology in the beginning high scholasticism .

In 1958 he received a call to the University of Trier, where he 1960 Extraordinary and 1962 full professor of dogmatic theology was appointed. In 1968, Breuning moved to the University of Bonn to take the chair for dogmatics as the successor to Johann Auer . In the academic years 1971/72 and 1978/79 he was dean of the Catholic theological faculty. In 1985 he retired . As an emeritus he taught until 1998 as a lecturer for dogmatics at the interdiocesan study house St. Lambert in Lantershofen and from 1996 to 1999 at the University of Koblenz-Landau . He also worked as a pastor at St. Maria Magdalena in Bonn- Endenich , where he lived, a. a. as President of the Kolping Family there . Breuning has published numerous scientific papers. The focus of work was the doctrine of God and Christology, questions of eschatology and the Christian-Jewish dialogue. On his 70th birthday on May 15, 1990, he was made a prelate.

Wilhelm Breuning was for many years a member of the working group of German-speaking dogmatists and fundamental theologians, which he headed for four years. From around 1980 to around 2010 he was a member of the discussion group Jews and Christians at the Central Committee of German Catholics and had been a member of the Catholic student association KDSt.V. since 1960.
