Wilhelm Eduard Scholz

W [ilhelm] E [duard] Scholz (* around 1807/1808 in Gimmel near Winzig , Lower Silesia , today to Gmina Jemielno ; † August 8, 1866 in Breslau ) was a German composer and conductor at the court of Prince August zu Hohenlohe-Öhringen in Schlawentzitz / Upper Silesia .

Life

A native of Gimmel at Tiny in Lower Silesia Composer WE Scholz, whose birth year is handed down not secured, recorded New [r] Journal of Music , a student of v Ignaz Ritter. Seyfried . In 1838 he was appointed Kapellmeister to Prince August von Hohenlohe-Öhringen at the court in Schlawentzitz in Upper Silesia. In 1847, the Neue Berliner Musikzeitung reported that the band was under the direction of the "capable capellmeister Scholz".

He composed overtures , symphonies , operas , sonatas , solo concerts , songs , masses and harmony music . He also arranged well-known works for the court orchestra in Schlawentzitz. The harmony music includes arrangements for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Don Giovanni and the 40th Symphony , Carl Maria von Weber's Oberon and Euryanthe , Gioachino Rossini's Guillaume Tell and Otello , Ludwig van Beethoven's Fidelio and the 5th Symphony , Giuseppe Verdi's Macbeth , and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's A Midsummer Night's Dream or Frédéric Chopin's Grande valse brillante .

During his lifetime, various of his compositions were published by FEC Leuckart Verlag , von Weinhold , Cranz and Hientzsch (all from Breslau). Some of his works have survived exclusively as autographs or copies. The compositions by WE Scholz known today are for the most part in the Hohenlohe Central Archive in Neuenstein . There you can find the autographs of his works, the autographs of the arrangements and prints.

At the time, the works of WE Scholz were predominantly discussed appreciatively in music newspapers. a. by Robert Schumann . However, some works have also received critical reviews.

The Musical Conversations Lexicon of 1840 describes him as a talented composer.

Instrumental concerts

The scores of the completely preserved instrumental concertos by the composer were created in 2016 by Stefan Antweiler from the individual parts and published as first editions. They were published by Are Musikverlag Mainz.
