Wilhelm Gail (manufacturer)

Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand Gail (born March 17, 1854 in Gießen ; † February 25, 1925 there ) was a German tobacco manufacturer and member of the state parliament.

Wilhelm Gail was the son of the Giessen tobacco manufacturer and member of the state parliament Georg Karl Ferdinand Gail , the owner of the Gail'schen cigar factory . He married Antonie, nee Knorr (* 1864), daughter of the judge Ludwig Knorr, in Gießen on June 24, 1882 . After his death, his son Dr. Georg Gail (1884–1950) ran the family business.

Gail attended grammar school in Gießen until 1866 and then secondary school in Rheydt . Then he did a commercial apprenticeship in his father's company. In 1874 he did military service and made trips to the USA in 1876/77 and 1883.

In 1882 he joined his father's company as a partner and in 1885 became the sole owner. Under Wilhelm Gail the development of the inherited factory reached its peak. The history of the factory during this time is described in the article on the Gail'schen cigar factory .

Wilhelm Gail was honored in 1892 with the title of Kommerzienrat and in 1909 a Grand Ducal Hessian Privy Councilor and in 1907 was appointed a lifelong member of the First Chamber of the Estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse by the Grand Duke . The state parliament mandate ended with the November Revolution of 1918. In 1912 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Giessen . From 1887 to 1898 he was a member of the Giessen Chamber of Commerce .
