Ludwig Ernst Philipp von Toll (born March 18, 1775 in Hamm , † January 14, 1851 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and commandant of the Gaudenz fortress .

Life

His parents were the major in Garrison Regiment No. 2 Heinrich Anton von Toll (* 1724 - 11 September 1805) and his wife Johann Wilhelmine, née von Zenge (* 1740). She was a daughter of the Prussian captain Johann Ludwig von Zenge and Eleonore von Gronde.

Military career

On October 16, 1789, Toll came to the infantry regiment "von Romberg" as a corporal . There he became an ensign on October 27, 1792 . During the First Coalition War he took part in the cannonade near Valmy , the battle near Kaiserslautern and the battles near Eschweiler, Meckenheim, Roth, the Schänzel as well as La Lune, Altstadt, Herzogshand and Zweibrücken . During that time he became second lieutenant on July 8, 1794 .

After the war he joined the grenadier battalion on June 1, 1799, which consisted of the companies of the regiments "von Burghagen" and "von Lattorff" . As Prime Lieutenant Toll became a company commander in the 4th West Prussian Reserve Battalion on December 8, 1806 during the Fourth Coalition War . After the lost war he received his resignation as captain on July 22, 1807 . So he went in 1808 as captain of the regiment Chevau-légers du Grand-duché de Berg of the bodyguard of Joachim Murat , Grand Duke of Cleves-Berg .

The troops belonged to the French Aemee and initially did patrol service in Brittany, then they were transferred to Spain to fight guerrillas . There he fought in the battles at Canlora, St. Domingo de Calzada, Logroño, Lombreras, Vitoria , Bilbao, Ciudad Radrigo , Capie Valencia, Don Juan, Astorga, Aldeapont, Vaillacago, Rosa de Rocca, Molina, Catalajud, Duenas, Valencia, Tabera, Brevisca and Ernari. At that time he received the Cross of the Legion of Honor , became a colonel lieutenant in 1811 and in September 1812 commander of the Lanzier regiment. In 1813 the regiment was transferred back to Germany and now fought against the allies in the battles at Löwenberg, Hochkirch, Nollendorf, Peterswalde, Zinnwald, Düben and in the Battle of Leipzig . For the Battle of Dresden he received the Officer's Cross of the Legion of Honor . At the end of 1813 the force was disbanded.

Toll then came into Prussian service, where he was major in command of the replacement battalion 28/29. From August 1, 1814, he was employed as a stage inspector, first in Elberfeld , then in Düsseldorf . On August 16, 1814, he became battalion leader of the Middle Rhine Landwehr. On April 2, 1815, he came to the 1st Pomeranian Landwehr Infantry Regiment as a major. During the campaign in 1815 he fought at Ligny and Belle Alliance . At Belle Alliance he earned the Iron Cross II class and the Russian Order of St. Anne, II class  .

On March 16, 1815 he was aggregated into the 33rd Infantry Regiment, there on September 15, 1816 battalion commander and on March 30, 1827 lieutenant colonel (with patent from April 16, 1827). Then on March 30, 1829 he was regimental commander and on March 30, 1830 colonel (patent from April 14, 1830). For this he received the Order of the Red Eagle III on January 18, 1832 . Class and on March 30, 1830 he was transferred to the Gaudenz fortress as commandant. On April 10, 1833 he was again aggregated to the 33rd Infantry Regiment. On March 20, 1838, Toll was given the character of Major General. He received the patent for this rank on June 11, 1839 with effect from March 20, 1838. On the occasion of his 50th anniversary in service, the King awarded him the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves, on July 6, 1841. On March 10, 1842, he received his retirement with the character of lieutenant general and the statutory pension .

On April 23, 1842, he received a gift of 200 thalers from the king. Toll died on January 14, 1851 in Berlin and was buried on January 17, 1851 in the garrison cemetery in Linienstrasse .

family

Toll was married twice. His first wife was on July 2, 1802 in Volmarstein Christiane Marie Sophie Liebrecht (* November 2, 1770; † July 5, 1805), a daughter of the war council Johann Anton Heinrich Liebrecht (1736-1821).

After her death, he married on February 8, 1817 in Gaudenz Friederike Elisabeth Christiane Sophie von Owstin (* May 21, 1781, † November 11, 1854), widowed von Below . She was the daughter of General Carl Philipp von Owstin . She too was buried in the garrison cemetery. The couple had children including:

The Prussian major a. D. Ferdinand Toll (born January 15, 1809, † August 20, 1876) was his natural son.

He also had an adopted daughter Frederike Luise Schwarzlose (born October 26, 1827, † September 8, 1897). This was on September 5, 1846 under the name and emblem of Great ennobled and was with the Prussian Major Leopold of verses (* Dec. 31, 1791, † November 1, 1868) married.
