Wilhelm Hartung (born August 2, 1879 in Raperswilen , Canton Thurgau, † January 4, 1957 in Zurich ) was a Swiss painter , fresco artist and graphic artist . He was the father of Willi Hartung and the brother of Eugen Hartung .

Live and act

Hartung studied at the University of Design and Art (HGKZ) , which emerged from the Zurich School of Applied Arts , founded in 1878 . In 1924 he took part in the Zurich City Theater Competition. He also worked as a designer of posters ( Art Nouveau poster for the Fête fédérale de chant, Neuchâtel 1912 and the vegetarian restaurant Hiltl , 1913) and stage sets.

Hartung created murals on various buildings in the city of Zurich: 1923/1924 the procession of armed women from Zurich to the Lindenhof on Strehlgasse, 1927 Manesse and Zähringer on Manesse- and Mühlegasse, 1925 a plinth on the house "zur Reblaube", 1939 the facade at the Swiss Heimatwerk near the Rudolf-Brun-Brücke . His murals can also be found in schools and kindergartens (Langmatt / Witikon 1934, Leimbach 1944, Laubegg 1946).

For the Allgemeine Baugenossenschaft Zürich (ABZ) he painted various residential colonies: in 1928 the Sihlfeld colony, in 1930 the Neugasse colony in District 5. In 1930 he painted around forty facade paintings for the Kanzleistrasse colony in Zürcher Aussersihl in the tradition of the Zürich cooperative paintings of the interwar period . The extensive work shows a diverse image of society from the first half of the 20th century.

His son was Willi Hartung and his brother was Eugen Hartung .
