Wilhelm Maria Lenz (born July 2, 1921 in Cologne ; † July 21, 2015 there ) was a German politician ( CDU ). From 1958 to 1980 he was a member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia , held the office of state parliament president from 1970 to 1980 and was at times chairman of the CDU parliamentary group .

Life and work

Wilhelm Lenz was born as the first child of a freight forwarder. As a teenager he was active in the Catholic youth movement. He graduated from school in 1939 and passed the Abitur with distinction. He was with the Reich Labor Service until 1940 , then began studying philology at the University of Cologne . He had to interrupt his studies in 1941 to do military service in World War II . In 1942 his father died in a bomb attack on Cologne. Wilhelm Lenz was a soldier with a flak battery until it fits into American prisoner of war came. After the war he resumed his studies (German, English and French) again, and graduated in 1949 with the promotion of Dr. phil. from. Lenz was initially a teacher at an evening grammar school and later became managing director of the North Rhine-Westphalia civil servants' association. He was an honorary member of the Catholic student union Unitas-Breslau in Cologne in the KV .

Lenz was buried in the Deutz cemetery in Cologne-Poll .

politics

Lenz joined the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in 1946. He held various positions in the CDU, including being chairman and board member of the Cologne-Stadt district association from 1963 to 1972, member of the state presidium of the CDU North Rhine-Westphalia from 1967 to 1977, and chairman from 1969 to 1970. From 1962 to 1977 he was also a member of the CDU's federal party committee.

On June 21, 1958, he was elected to the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia in constituency 18 (Cologne-Stadt VI), he retained the mandate for five legislative periods (4th to 8th electoral period) until May 28, 1980. Lenz was in the state parliament from 1962 to 1970 chairman of the CDU parliamentary group. He was Chairman of the Main Committee from 1962 to 1966 and Chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee from 1966 to 1970 . From July 27, 1970 until he left parliament, he was President of the Landtag of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Lenz was chairman of the administrative board of the WDR from 1971 to 1977 . He was also a member of the Board of Trustees of the North Rhine-Westphalia Art Collection Foundation .

Honors

After Lenz had already received the Great Federal Cross of Merit (1969) with a star (1973) and shoulder ribbon (1977) years earlier , he was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia on September 18, 1986 .
