Ernst Gnoss

Ernst Gnoss (born July 22, 1900 in Styrum (now Mülheim an der Ruhr ), † March 12, 1949 in Davos ) was a German politician ( SPD ) and the first president of the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament .

life and work

After elementary school, Gnoss trained as a typesetter. He became involved in the SPD early on and held several party offices during the Weimar Republic , particularly in the field of youth work.

After the NSDAP came to power, he was arrested in 1935 and sentenced to four years in prison. After his release from prison, he was initially able to work in the profession he had learned in Solingen, but in 1944 he was committed to the Todt Organization .

After the Second World War, he participated in the reconstruction of the SPD in the Bergisches Land, in the Niederrhein district and in Solingen, where he also became chairman. He was appointed to the first state parliament and on October 2, 1946 elected the first state parliament president. From 1947 to 1948 he was a member of the Zone Advisory Board for the British Zone . He was an assessor on the SPD executive committee and organized the party congress in Düsseldorf in 1948. From April 1948 until his death he was Minister of Reconstruction in the Arnold I cabinet . At the same time Gnoss was the editor of the “Rhein-Echo” magazine and was active in the State Press Council, which was responsible for issuing licenses in the field of newspapers and magazines.

Ernst Gnoss died on March 12, 1949 of a lung disease. He is buried in the Nordfriedhof in Düsseldorf .
