Peter Erkens

Peter Erkens (born July 24, 1898 in Rheydt , † October 22, 1972 in Mönchengladbach ) was a German politician ( center , CDU ).

Life

After attending primary school and graduating from the humanistic grammar school in Rheydt, Erkens studied at the missionary school in Steyl in the Netherlands . He took part in the First World War as a soldier . He then worked at the central office of the Volksverein for Catholic Germany in Mönchengladbach. He later moved to the private sector as a foreign correspondent, where he held executive positions from 1923 to 1945. As a soldier he also took part in World War II .

After the end of the war, Erkens was a department head and managing director of the Mönchengladbach Chamber of Commerce and Industry from 1945 to 1958 .

Erkens was a member of the center until the party was dissolved in 1933. After the Second World War he joined the CDU.

Erkens belonged to the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament from 1947 to 1966 and was a member of the reconstruction committee there.

Public offices

In July 1958, Erkens was appointed Minister for Reconstruction to the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia led by Prime Minister Franz Meyers . On May 1, 1961, the department he headed was renamed the Ministry of State Planning, Housing and Public Works. In this capacity he was replaced by Joseph Blank in July 1962 .
