Wilhelm Plath (born November 7, 1795 in Hamburg , † May 12, 1877 in Braunschweig ) was a German obstetrician , pediatrician and writer .

Life

Plath was the son of the timber merchant Johann Christian Plath (1738–1817) from his second marriage to Christiane Misler (1759–1850), daughter of the senior secretary Johann Gottfried Misler (1720–1789). The preacher to Sankt Michaelis Johann Christian Plath (1790-1852) was his brother.

After his schooling at the Johanneum School of Scholars , Plath, like his brother Christian, took part in the Bremen-Verdenschen Hussars under Lieutenant Colonel von dem Bussche with the German Legion in the campaign against the French in 1813 and 1814 . After the peace he learned from 1815 to 1819, the action in Hamburg and from 1820 to 1822 in Magdeburg . Since the commercial aspect did not appeal to him, however, he studied medicine at the Friedrichs University in Halle an der Saale from 1823 . In 1826 he received his doctorate in medicine under Kurt Sprengel (1766–1833) . He then settled in Hamburg as a pediatrician and obstetrician. In 1857 he retired to Braunschweig and devoted himself to his literary work.

family

On July 3, 1830, Plath married Amalie Schütt (1802–1883), daughter of the Hamburg accountant and broker Georg Christian Schütt (1772–1814). Since this marriage remained childless, he took in three foster daughters:

  • Elisabeth born Gutmann ∞ Otto Haeusler
  • Lucie born Gutmann
  • Marie Margrete b. Small catch ∞ Albert Deichmann
