Wilhelm Plog

Wilhelm Plog (born April 5, 1903 in Hagenow ; † November 6, 1986 in Hanover ) was a German publicist and editor-in-chief of the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung (HAZ), among others .

Life

Wilhelm Plog was the son of a Mecklenburg farmer and father of the future director of the North German Broadcasting Corporation , Jobst Plog .

Career

Wilhelm Plog attended the Katharineum in Lübeck , completed a bank apprenticeship in Lübeck and studied history, German and art history at the University of Munich . During his studies in 1923 he became a member of the Alt-Wittelsbach Munich singers . In the 1930s Plog went to Hanover. In 1937 he joined the NSDAP , was employed as head of the editorial department for their party organ, the Lower Saxony daily newspaper published by Bernhard Rust , but was soon dismissed by Gauleiter Hartmann Lauterbacher .

After temporarily participating in World War II , Wilhelm Plog also worked for the Hannoversche Zeitung . After 1945 he worked in the church chancellery of regional bishop Hanns Lilje in Hanover and was co-founder and managing director of the weekly newspaper Sonntagsblatt published by Lilje in Hamburg .

In 1956, Plog succeeded Adolf Halfeld († 1955) as editor-in-chief of the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung and became a member of the management team of the newspaper publisher. Under Plog's leadership, the HAZ expanded to become the daily newspaper with the highest circulation in Lower Saxony. For a long time, Plog also took on the role of general manager of the Madsack publishing company . In 1971 he retired.

Wilhelm Plog's grave can be found in the Seelhorst city cemetery .
