Ernst Friedrich Wilhelm Rögge the Elder (born April 28, 1829 in Ostercappeln in the Kingdom of Hanover , † February 11, 1908 in Munich ) was a German fresco , genre and history painter .

Life

Rögge was the son of a butcher, he began his training with the painter and lithographer Theodor Joseph Terpen in Osnabrück and studied from November 11, 1848 at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich with Philipp von Foltz . He continued his studies with Joseph Kehren in Düsseldorf . He then went on a study trip to the Netherlands and northern Italy .

Rögge worked mainly as a history painter in Munich. For King Ludwig II of Bavaria he created frescoes in the castles of Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee . He also painted genre scenes from rural life or a game of chess.

He was the father of the painter Wilhelm Rögge the Younger .
