Wilhelm Rex

Wilhelm Rex (born July 10, 1870 in Braunsberg near Königsberg , † July 21, 1944 in Passau ) was a German sculptor .

Life

Wilhelm Rex, baptized as Friedrich Wilhelm Rex, came from an East Prussian family of teachers, organists and painters. Wilhelm Rex learned wood carving in Berlin for four years. He attended the educational institute of the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin, studied anatomy for six semesters under Maximilian Schäfer and architecture and applied arts with Albin Müller from the Darmstadt artists' colony ; he worked as a freelancer for Otto Lessing , Franz Metzner and Gotthold Riegelmann , there as a studio manager. He worked as a modeller and stone sculptor for building sculptures at various locations in Germany: Dresden, Cologne, Aachen, Düsseldorf, Magdeburg, Wittenberg, and longer settled in Berlin and Hamburg. He has received several awards and numerous commissions from public institutions. He made a name for himself in particular with his portrait busts in stone and bronze and made plaques and medals. His studios in Berlin and Hamburg were destroyed in the war, and many of his public works have also been destroyed or lost. Rex was a member of the Hamburg art community .

His son from his second marriage is the painter and author Hartlib Rex (1936–2009), married in 1978 to Sonia Rex-Junod.

From 1920 Wilhelm Rex was represented in exhibitions of the Hamburg artist community, together with Ludwig Kunstmann , Friedrich Wield , Albrecht , Wöbke, Ulmer, Irwahn , Richard Bauroth , Richard Kuöhl , Arthur Bock , Twesten, Henle , Ely, Kuksch, Barlach .

Publications in newspapers: Honors / Mention on the occasion of the inauguration of monuments that he had created. Honors for the 70th birthday:

  • In the 1929 yearbooks there are articles about the sculptor W. Rex written by Paul Hofmann (note from Prof. Dr. Wolf Stubbe to the widow Frieda Rex).
  • Note in the document collection of the Altona Museum, zoological department on the sculpture by W. Rex, which was exhibited there for a long time, called the large model "Horse and Man".
