Wilhelm Salzer

Wilhelm Salzer (born April 19, 1896 in Vöcklabruck , Upper Austria ; † July 12, 1975 in Steyr , Upper Austria) was an Austrian politician ( CSP , later ÖVP ).

Life

Wilhelm Salzer first attended compulsory schools in Upper Austria and the workers' college in Munich . As a young man he enrolled at the University of Vienna , where he studied economics for five semesters as an adjunct student . As a trained businessman , Salzer was the director of the Linz housing association Neue Heimat .

Salzer's political career began in 1922 when he was sworn in as a Christian social member of the Linz municipal council . He was there until 1929. At the beginning of the 1930s Salzer moved to Carinthia , where he was a member of the CSP municipal council in Villach from 1934 to 1936 . From 1931 to 1936 Salzer was also Vice President of the Carinthian Chamber of Labor .

In 1938, after the annexation of Austria , Salzer was briefly imprisoned.

In May 1949 Salzer was sworn in for the ÖVP as a member of the Federal Council. Salzer served as Federal Councilor for twelve years, until November 1961. Salzer held the office of President of the Federal Council twice, in the first half of 1957 and most recently in the last six months before he left the Federal Council .

Parallel to his office as Federal Councilor, Salzer was again on the Linz City Council from 1955 to 1960 after a 26-year absence.

Within his party, Salzer was deputy ÖVP party chairman in Upper Austria under Heinrich Gleißner .
