description

Appearance, wood and leaf

Eucalyptus lane-poolei grows as a medium-sized tree or in the form of the mallee - eucalyptus , a growth form that is more shrub -like than tree-shaped . It can grow heights of 3 to 12 meters. Usually there are several stems that form a lignotuber . The bark is mostly smooth and powdered white. The wood is alternately twisted, strong reddish-brown and takes on a dark purple-brown color as it dries over the years. The wide sapwood is light.

There is heterophyllia . The leaves are always divided into a short petiole and a leaf blade. On young specimens, the leaf blades are lanceolate to broadly lanceolate with a length of about 6 centimeters and a width of about 3 centimeters. With them, both leaf surfaces are colored the same. On older specimens, the leaf blades are lanceolate and slightly sickle-shaped with a pointed upper end at a length of 10 or 11 centimeters and a width of about 2 centimeters. The leaf veins in the adult specimens are fine and inconspicuous.

Inflorescence, flower and fruit

The flowering period in Western Australia extends from January to April or August to September. The stem-round inflorescence stem is about 1.5 cm long. There are usually four to six flowers together in an inflorescence. The pedicel-round flower stalk is about 1 cm long.

The moderately large flowers are hermaphroditic, radial symmetry and fourfold. The capsule, known as the "operculum", which surrounds the shiny bud, is very thick and, when almost ripe, light, but clearly pointed. The almost hemispherical calyx with a diameter of about 1 centimeter narrows very abruptly into the flower stalk. The flowers are white to creamy white. The many approximately 9 millimeter long stamens are bent inward in the buds. The relatively large anthers open wide in parallel slits. The wide, sloping disc forms a raised ring around the ovary.

The hemispherical, slightly convex capsule fruits with a diameter of about 1 centimeter have a wide rim.

Occurrence

The natural range of Eucalyptus lane-poolei is the southern part of the west coast of Western Australia , around Perth . Eucalyptus lane-poolei is found in the independent counties of Armadale , Busselton , Coorow , Dandargan , Gingin , Gosnells , Murray , Northam , Serpentine-Jarrahdale and Waroona in the Mid West , Peel , Perth, South West and Wheatbelt regions .

Eucalyptus lane-poolei grows best in sandy loam soils or sandy soils , often with gravel on laterite - or granite . Eucalyptus lane-poolei can be found on slopes or along stream banks.

Systematics

The first description of Eucalyptus lane-poolei was made in 1920 by Joseph Maiden in the journal Journal and Proceedings of the Royal Society of New South Wales . The type material has the inscription " Type from Beenup, WA (CE Lane-Poole, No. 465.) ". The specific epithet lane-poolei honors the collector of the type material , the forester Charles Lane Poole (August 16, 1885 to November 22, 1970).

With Eucalyptus relicta forms Eucalyptus lane-poolei also a natural hybrids .
