Wilhelm Schell

Wilhelm Schell (born October 31, 1826 in Fulda , † February 13, 1904 in Karlsruhe ; full name: Wilhelm Joseph Friedrich Nikolaus Schell ) was a German mathematician and university professor .

Schell grew up in Fulda and studied mathematics at the Philipps University in Marburg and at the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin . In 1849 he passed his teaching examination in Berlin . In 1851 he was in Marburg with his dissertation about the handling easier crooked surfaces doctorate . In the same year he completed his habilitation and became a private lecturer at the Philipps University of Marburg and from 1856 an associate professor . In 1861 he became a teacher of geometry at the Polytechnic School in Karlsruhe and in 1863, as the successor to Alfred Clebsch, he became a full professor of theoretical mechanics and synthetic geometry . Schell also read about analysis .

He was significantly involved in the transformation of the Karlsruhe Polytechnic into a technical university and worked out the habilitation regulations. He had been involved in building up the university library, the holdings of which were scattered across the individual faculties before he took office, since 1867; the following year he was officially commissioned.

In 1891 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 1901 he retired .

He was awarded the honorary title of Privy Councilor ( Grand Ducal Baden ) .

Schell played the organ and piano privately , he also dealt with the history of music .
