Wilhelm Tkaczyk

Wilhelm Tkaczyk (born February 27, 1907 in Zabrze ; died December 2, 1982 in Berlin ) was a German poet, translator and librarian .

Life

Wilhelm Tkaczyk was the illegitimate son of a maid. After an apprenticeship in a wire and rope factory, he became unemployed and a casual worker. From 1923 he wrote his first poems, which were published in social democratic and later in communist newspapers. In 1926 he joined the KPD . In 1928 he became a member of the League of Proletarian Revolutionary Writers and head of its local group in Upper Silesia . In 1933 he was imprisoned for some time by the National Socialists and all of his manuscripts were confiscated. Then he worked again as a simple worker and trained as a librarian. He was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1939 because of illegal work . In 1945 he was taken prisoner by the Soviets and taken to an anti-fascist school . In 1946 he returned to Berlin. From 1946 to 1972 he was the librarian of the German Cultural Association . Tkaczyk became known for his poems and translations.
