Live and act

From 1931 to 1937 Wölfel studied civil engineering at the German Technical University in Prague and then worked as a structural engineer and site manager for construction companies in Prague and Pressburg . He then served in the German Wehrmacht in France and the USSR from 1939 to 1945. In the summer of 1945 Wölfel settled in Eisenach as a civil engineer and site manager and five years later he was responsible for the reconstruction of the village of Bruchstedt , which had been ravaged by a storm . In this role, Wölfel played a major role in the development of dam construction in the GDR : Rappbode dam , Pöhl dam , Straussfurt flood retention basin and Hohenwarte II pumped storage plant . In 1959, Wölfel received a doctorate from the Weimar University of Architecture and Construction (HAB Weimar) with a dissertation on a new type of bituminous outer skin seal for stone dams . a PhD and there for a professor with lectureship for water and foundation engineering appointed. As holder of the chair for hydraulic engineering and water management at the HAB Weimar, Wölfel developed extensive teaching and research activities in the above-mentioned areas from 1959 to 1978. After his retirement, Wölfel turned to the history of structural engineering and, under the editing of Doris Greiner-Mai from VEB Verlag für Bauwesen, published two monographs on the history of the water wheel (1987) and hydraulic engineering in the old empires (1990), which were successful and as License issues were exported to the Federal Republic of Germany. The last-mentioned book was provided with illustrations by the graphic artist Klaus Nerlich.

In the 1990s, Wölfels pen published numerous reports on the history of hydraulic engineering and water management in the journal Bautechnik , which were summarized in two special issues of the aforementioned journal in 1997 and 1999.
