William Larned
William Augustus "Bill" Larned (born December 30, 1872 in Summit , New Jersey , † December 16, 1926 in New York ) was an American tennis player and seven-time individual winner of the US championships .
Life
Larned was born in New Jersey in 1872 and studied at the private Cornell University in Ithaca . In 1892 he won the individual of the Intercollegiate Championships . Between 1891 and 1911 he played regularly in the American championships and reached at least twice in every year in which he competed, at least the semi-finals.
In 1898 Larned took part in the Spanish-American War as a member of the Rough Riders .
In 1901 he won the individual title of the American championships by defeating Beals Wright in the final. The following year Larned was able to defend the title. After he had to admit defeat in the Challenge Round Laurence Doherty in 1903 , he was able to win the US title again in 1907. He defended him four more times in a row, until his retirement in 1911. In addition to Richard Sears and Bill Tilden , he was able to win the tournament with the most frequently.
Twice - in 1896 and 1905 - Larned also appeared at the Wimbledon tournament and reached the quarterfinals each time.
In 1926, Larned committed suicide at the age of 53.
