William Lockhart Bogle

William Lockhart Bogle (born February 23, 1857 in Cawder Cottage ( Cawder House ) near Glasgow , Lanarkshire , Scotland ; † 1900 in Watford , Hertfordshire , England ) was a British portrait and genre painter and illustrator of the Düsseldorf School .

Life

From a young age, Bogle, one of eight children of the couple Hugh Bogle (* 1811) and Alexandrina Jessie Macrae (1827–1900), aspired to train as a painter. From 1881 to 1883 he first studied in Düsseldorf . At the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1882 he attended the “United Painting Class” of Julius Roeting and Eduard Gebhardt , who rated his achievements there as “very good”. He then continued his studies in Glasgow. Then Bogle lived in Bushey , from 1887 in London .

Bogle created genre paintings, including Reading to Grandfather in 1890 , and portraits, including that of Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli in 1892 , which was later used to decorate 10 Downing Street . For many years he lived as an illustrator for newspapers, magazines and book publishers.

In the period between 1883 and 1893 he exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts and in galleries on Suffolk Street in London, such as the Royal Society of British Artists . During his studies in Düsseldorf he was represented at the Royal Scottish Academy .
