Heinrich Ludwig Karl August William "Willy" Tischbein , also Wilhelm Tischbein (born February 22, 1871 in Sarstedt near Hanover , † February 9, 1946 at Gut Rixförde near Celle ) was a German cyclist and industrialist .

Life

family

Tischbein was the son of a businessman. On May 7, 1903, Wilhelm Tischbein married Martha Beplate in Hanover (born September 2, 1879 in Hanover). One of his daughters, Mercedes Tischbein (born February 11, 1904 in Hanover) married Hans Bahlsen in Hanover .

Athletic career

Even during his apprenticeship, Tischbein got on bicycles as a touring rider and, for example, took third place in a youth race in 1886. After his apprenticeship he moved to Magdeburg as an assistant in the company FA Jordan , where he rose to the position of authorized signatory .

In addition, Tischbein continued his racing career, from 1888 on the penny-farthing , with which he achieved numerous victories. After a fall in a race in Berlin that broke his collarbone , Tischbein switched to tricycle in 1898 . Among other things, he won the German championship of the German Cyclists Association (DRB) in 1891, 1892 and 1893 over one and five kilometers. In 1892 he became English master, after having previously won the title of Prussian master. Overall, Tischbein took 77 first, 45 second and 29 third places on Hochrad and Niederrad in the course of his cycling career.

Professional

Willy Tischbein attended the commercial school in Halle (Saale) and followed a commercial training from 1886 to 1888. In 1894 he ended his cycling career and went as a commercial employee to the bicycle tire sales department of the Continental Caoutchouc and Gutta- Percha Company (today Continental AG ) in Hanover. In addition to his work, he made long-distance automobile journeys from 1900, some of which he won, such as the Eisenach-Berlin-Eisenach long-distance journey in 1900 and Mannheim-Pforzheim-Mannheim on a de Dietrich in 1901 . In 1901 he was one of the founding members of the Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA). Ernst Sachs , co-founder of the Schweinfurt company Fichtel & Sachs, was one of his closest friends .

In 1905 Willy Tischbein became director of Continental, and around two years later in 1907 a member of the company's board of directors. On January 1, 1926, he succeeded Siegmund Seligmann as general director and chairman of the board of the stock corporation. Through the merger with Hannoversche Gummiwerke Excelsior AG to form Continental Gummiwerke AG , Tischbein initiated the company's rise to become one of the most important rubber and tire factories in Europe.

On December 31, 1934, Tischbein left Continental due to health problems and differences of opinion with the chairman of the supervisory board, Fritz Opel .
