William Warner Bishop, Jr.

William (Bill) Warner Bishop, Jr. (born  June 10, 1906 in Princeton , New Jersey , † December 29, 1987 in Ann Arbor , Michigan ) was an American lawyer and professor at the University of Michigan .

Life

Bishop was born the only son of librarian William Warner Bishop and his wife Finie Murfree Burton. The family came to Michigan in 1915. He received his school education in Ann Arbor. This was followed by a study of political science at the University of Michigan, which he graduated in 1925 with a Bachelor of Arts. He completed his graduate studies in law at Harvard and Columbia Universities , but then returned to the University of Michigan and graduated there in 1931. From 1931 to 1935 he worked as a research assistant at the chair of Edwin DeWitt Dickinson . Then he worked as a lawyer in New York City . In 1939 he moved into the civil service and worked for eight years as an advisor in the United States Department of State . In this position he appeared several times on an international level. He took part in the 1946 Paris Peace Conference as a member of the American delegation . In 1947 he took on short-term lectureships at the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University before a 1948 call received a professorship at the University of Michigan. In 1966 he took over the Edwin DeWitt Dickinson Professorship for International Law, which he held until his retirement in 1976. As early as 1965 he gave lectures at the Hague Academy for International Law . Bishop was married to Mary Fairfax Shrew with whom he had a daughter. He died of a heart attack on December 29, 1987 and was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery in Ann Arbor.

Memberships

Bishop was a member of the Institut de Droit International . During his studies he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa student association and the Order of the Coif . He was also involved in the American Society for International Law , of which he was a member from 1933 until his death. In 1960 he took over the position of the deputy chairman of the company and from 1982 carried the title of honorary chairman. In addition, he was editor-in-chief from 1953 to 1955 and from 1962 to 1970 responsible for the publication of the American Journal of International Law . In 1975 he was appointed arbitrator at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague .
