The Windy is a French two-man dinghy , which is recognized as an association class in Germany . The boat designed by Leo Bruckner was manufactured from 1962 to 1986 and then again in 2008 in France and Germany in around 1500 to 2000 copies.

history

The boat was designed from 1962 to the 1980s as a shipyard class by the French Leo Bruckner (born 1922), actually a shirt manufacturer and successful regatta sailor, and manufactured in Saint-Égrève . After it succeeded in one-of-a-kind regattas in 1962 and 1963 by the French specialist magazine Bateaux, it also caused a sensation when it was presented at the boat shows in Paris and Friedrichshafen due to its speed. By the mid-1970s, larger class associations developed in France, Germany and Switzerland, so that in 1977 the hope of recognition as an international class was formulated, which, however, was not fulfilled. National classes, however, arose in France, Germany and Switzerland. After the German class association was dissolved by the DSV in 2010, efforts are now being made to re-establish it. The sailing symbol (class symbol) is the letter W.

construction

The Windy is a racing dinghy, as it was often developed in various sizes from the 1950s, with shorter but wider hull shapes that quickly started planing. The hull weight could be kept relatively low thanks to the new materials, it was 135 kg in the first version. The hull is made of polyester resin with an average thickness of 4 mm, reinforced with fiberglass mats and rovings . The hull and deck are glued to the rubbing strip and stiffened with plastic profiles. The sword and rudder are made of marine plywood. The Alurigg is guyed with shrouds and forestay, with the spreader also being diamond-reinforced. All variants of the Windy have a 7/8 rig consisting of a mainsail and headsail, optionally as a jib or genoa , and a spinnaker . Weight trimming is possible using the straps and the trapeze.

Sailing characteristics

As a representative of the gliders , as they emerged through the development of composite materials after the Second World War, the boat has a relatively high initial stability due to the wide wetted area in the stern area and therefore a high sail load rating comparable to older boats . On the other hand, the Kreuz is not as close to the wind as historically older designs - or even keel boats. Compared to the prototype of this design, the Flying Dutchman (FD) from 1951, which had become Olympic in 1960 , the Windy was not so uncompromisingly designed for speed, but as a Mediterranean dinghy, thanks to the V-shaped section in the foredeck, it behaved well in waves and good light wind properties due to the large sail area. According to its yardstick number , it is slightly faster than the 470 dinghy or corsair , but significantly slower than the 505 or FD. A test of the second design, the Windy Racing, in the sailing magazine Yacht , which it described as sometimes a bit soft in the hull, also certified it in 1973 to be a thoroughbred regatta boat. Her verdict is: “... for sporty non-beginners who don't want to go on big trips, but who are primarily interested in real sporty sailing. The Windy is only suitable for leisurely family sailing in light weather. "

Construction variants

The construction of the dinghy was modified several times, whereby the boat shape of the shell and the measured sail area remained the same in order to enable regatta sailing of the versions with each other. This results in a common yardstick number for all construction variants, even if one can argue that there must be gradual differences.

  • Windy Standard , 1962-1969. Open foredeck, for regattas and tours, has no lockable storage space and no spi tunnel. The side closed buoyancy and air chambers in the foredeck with a total of 3 m³ ensure unsinkability.
  • Windy Racing , 1969-1977. For regatta & tours, the cockpit leads around the free-standing mast, the foredeck is completely closed (fore bulkhead), like the side floats. This design is available in two versions, with a spi tunnel (regatta) or without (touring).
  • Windy Racing S , 1977-1985. The sandwich construction of the shell and deck, which are connected with rigid polyurethane foam, makes it possible to guide all sheets and traps below deck, so that the deck remains free of running goods . The mast is open and is enclosed by the foredeck, which no longer offers any lockable storage space.
  • Windy Racing Super , 1986, 2008: without lockable storage space
