The Winzergemeinschaft Franken eG (GWF) is a German winegrowers' cooperative based in Repperndorf , a district of the Lower Franconian district town of Kitzingen .
history
In 1959, nine winegrowers 'cooperatives founded the central winery of Franconian winegrowers' cooperatives Würzburg eGmbH, based in Iphofen . A short time later it was renamed the regional winegrowers' cooperative Franken eGmbH (GWF) and in 1963 the business was relocated to Repperndorf. Since 2007 the cooperative has been called Winzergemeinschaft Franken eG. The short form GWF was retained.
Companies
With around 1,400 winegrowers who produced around 11.5 million liters of wine on a vineyard area of 1,300 hectares in 2015 , GWF is one of the six largest winegrowing cooperatives in Germany and the largest wine producer in the state of Bavaria . It is mainly sold through food retailers and discounters .
Until 2005, the company was headed by Helmut Schätzlein for several decades. In 1996, a marketing strategy under his direction triggered controversial reactions: The sticker on the Domina type of wine showed a dominatrix with a six-tailed cat and was criticized as "tasteless", "embarrassing" and "sexist". The sales of the wine variety increased twenty-fold compared to comparable varieties. The label was replaced in the following year.
In 2013, under the direction of Schätzlein's successor, Michael Schweinberger, the winegrowers' association opened Germany's first “Autobahn vinotheque ” at a service station on the A3 near Würzburg . The ADAC traffic club was critical of the wine tasting on the autobahn . Due to disagreements about the future direction of the cooperative, Schweinberger left the company in 2014. Since then, Paul E. Ritter has been the managing director of the winegrowing community.
In 2009, the first wine bistro of the Franconian winegrowing community was opened. The bistro established the tradition of having a drink on the old Main Bridge in Würzburg.
In 2017, Meininger Verlag selected the Franconian winegrowing community as the best regional winegrowing cooperative in its 14th edition of the German wine cooperatives performance test. The basis for this performance test is the wine quality of the range of the participating cooperatives.
Together with the trading company EDEKA, the Franconian winegrowers' association supports the joy grape campaign . In 2017, the proceeds from the Albert Schweitzer Children's Villages campaign in Thuringia and Saxony were supported.
Paul E. Ritter retired in February 2018. Since then, Cornelius Lauter has been the new managing director of the Winzergemeinschaft Franken eG.
