The Italian feature film We were so in love ( C'eravamo tanto amati ) alternatively bears the TV title We loved each other so much . Ettore Scola directed it in 1974 with the actors Stefania Sandrelli , Nino Manfredi and Vittorio Gassman , based on a book he wrote with the duo Age & Scarpelli . In a wistful tone and with comedic scenes, he tells, as a long flashback over three decades, of the life and the disappointed youth hopes of three men and the woman standing between them. The focus is on the conflict of Italian leftists in the post-war decades between their ideals and their adaptation to reality.
action
During the Second World War, the three young Italians Antonio, Gianni and Nicola are partisans. They risk their lives to rid their country of the Germans and become best friends. After the war, idealists dream of creating a just society. Antonio finds his great love in the beautiful Luciana. As soon as he has introduced her to Gianni, Gianni is faced with a choice: friendship or love.
Gianni breaks with Antonio and takes Luciana out of him. Despite initial non-material reservations about working as a lawyer for a heavily wealthy building contractor operating on the verge of legality, he becomes the latter's second hand. He separates from Luciana, who reacts with a suicide attempt, and marries Elide, the magnate's daughter.
Nicola, on the other hand, sticks to his socialist ideals and loses his job as a result. His wife, whom he can no longer look after, leaves him and their son. All the more freely he can indulge his passion for neorealistic film art. Luciana returns to Antonio, but when he introduces her to Nicola, his suffering repeats itself. Luciana doesn't stay long with Nicola and tries unsuccessfully in the film industry. After a few years she meets Antonio again, who works as a low-ranking nurse. They get married and have a family.
Gianni rises in the empire of his boss and becomes more and more lonely. Elide, his wife, cannot stand his incomprehension towards her and kills himself in a traffic accident. 25 years after they split up, Antonio runs into Gianni by chance and thinks he is a park attendant. The next day they meet for dinner with Nicola. While Antonio and Nicola do not regret having kept their ideals, Gianni cannot bring himself to confess his social status to them. Only when they want to bring his forgotten driver's license over to him the next day do they realize what life he has covered.
