We are the new ones is a German comedy film from the director and producer Ralf Westhoff from 2014 . The film premiered on June 29, 2014 at the Munich Film Festival .

action

Anne, a biologist around 60 years old, has to give up her Munich city apartment, and since she cannot afford another apartment on her own, she asks former flatmates from her student days if they would be interested in another flat share. Ready to do this: Eddi, an old womanizer and single for a long time, and Johannes, a socially committed lawyer who primarily takes clients who cannot actually afford a lawyer and therefore have no money themselves. Eddi was previously diagnosed with a serious illness, but he does not tell the other two about it.

When the three of them moved into their new apartment, there were soon conflicts with the student flat one floor up. There Katharina, Barbara and Thorsten are about to take important exams and, with their structured, orderly and work-oriented lifestyle, represent the opposite of what the three elderly people understand by a student flat share. The generation conflict that arises leads to numerous situations in which the two parties quarrel. But even the elderly still have to deal with some conflicts among themselves and learn new sides of themselves in the sudden coexistence.

One day it turns out that all three of the young students are in a major crisis, and the elderly, some reluctantly, decide to give their young neighbors a hand. Johannes helps Katharina to structure her law examination material, which she desperately needs; Anne does gymnastics with Thorsten against his severe intervertebral disc disease; and Eddi gives Barbara the self-confidence she needs to stop being exploited by her partner. The film ends with the six having a spontaneous party together.

reception

criticism

We are the new ones is well-made, somewhat too dialogue-heavy entertainment, but the generation conflict is only used here as a key word and punch line. Anyone who has a deeper interest in the topic is sitting in the wrong film. "

- Thomas Vorwerk, filmstarts.de

“When Anne, Eddie and Johannes act as mentors for the stressed and back-lame contemporary students, Ralf Westhoff makes his conviction that real progress and balance can only come about through the exchange between the generations. But the melancholy about missed opportunities and the faint doubt about the correctness of one's own actions remain and turn We Are the Newcomers into a little comedy gem. Exactly the right film for a country that in its World Cup euphoria is on the verge of hyperventilation and urgently needs to ground itself again. "

- Oliver Kaever, Die Zeit

“Westhoff wrote brilliant dialogues for them - but also for the boys. 'By the way, if you had been a little quicker back then, we wouldn't have to discuss standard study periods and tuition fees today,' says Thorsten - hits, sunk. He has a rare talent for making dialogues seem credible and at the same time being able to bring them to a comical point. The fact that 'We are the new ones' doesn’t give much visually is almost unnoticed in these dialogues. "
