The Wittow ferry was built in 1895 at the Szczecin Vulcan shipyard .

From 1896, the small train ferry was used as a Wittower ferry on the island of Rügen . Together with the sister ship Jaspar von Maltzahn , also built in Stettin in 1911 , later Bergen , it served for decades to carry three railway cars or (if necessary) a steam locomotive of the narrow-gauge railway line Bergen –Trent – Wittower Fähre – Wiek– Altenkirchen of the Rügen Kleinbahn (RüKB) or 4 –5 vehicles to be driven over the 350 m wide river that separates the Wittow peninsula from the heart of Rügen between the municipalities of Trent and Wiek and at the same time connects the Rassower river with the Breetzer Bodden .

On September 10, 1968, rail traffic on the northern route from Wittower Ferry (Fährhof) to Altenkirchen on the Wittow peninsula and on December 18, 1969, passenger traffic to Bergen was discontinued. On January 19, 1970, after the cessation of freight traffic, the Bergen – Wittower ferry section was also closed. With the end of the route to Altenkirchen, the tracks on both ferries were expanded and transferred to the White Fleet in order to now transport people and vehicles .

The crossing took about four minutes each.

The ferry was decommissioned in August 1995 and towed to the "Sugar Factory" technology museum in Barth, West Pomerania , where it was to serve as a café. On October 10, 2005 the ferry was lifted out of the water and placed in front of the sugar factory in Barther Harbor. Viewing is possible on request. In 2012 the ship was sold to the "Friends of the Rügen Small Railways Association" and since then the ferry has been operationally refurbished.

The sister ship Bergen had already been scrapped in 1997.

A new Wittow ferry, built at the Eisenhüttenstadt shipyard , was put into service in 1996.
