The Great Jasmunder Bodden is a lagoon and a marginal water of the southern Baltic Sea in Western Pomerania within the island of Rügen . It belongs to the North Rügen Bodden .

The lagoon is around 14 kilometers long, an average of six kilometers wide and up to seven meters deep. The Great Jasmunder Bodden has an area of 58.4 square kilometers, with Breetzer Bodden, Breeger Bodden, Lebbiner Bodden, Neuendorfer Wiek and Tetzitzer See, the total water surface increases to over 94 square kilometers.

The water surface is surrounded in the north by the Wittow and Jasmund peninsulas , which are connected by the narrow Schaabe spit . In the south, the main part of the island of Rügen, the Muttland , borders the Bodden. In the east there is a connection to the Kleiner Jasmunder Bodden near Lietzow . The two lagoons were not separated until 1869 when a dam was built ( Bundesstrasse 96 and the Stralsund – Sassnitz line ). To the west, the bay at the Wittower ferry has a narrow connection to the Rassower Strom and thus to the Baltic Sea . The western part of the Bodden includes the Breetzer Bodden, the Breeger Bodden and the Lebbiner Bodden, which, strictly speaking, no longer belong to the Great Jasmunder Bodden. The north of the Bodden is relatively poorly structured. Only the Spykersche See near Spyker protrudes inland. The southwest, on the other hand, is rugged, with the Tetzitzer See and Neuendorfer Wiek protruding far into the interior. The Störtebeker Festival takes place every summer on the far south-east bank of the Bodden near Ralswiek .

The water of the Great Jasmunder Bodden is made up of fresh water from the flowing streams and the salty water of the Baltic Sea, and with a salt content of 0.7 to 0.8 percent it is considered brackish water . Almost the entire bank is surrounded by reeds . Part of the shoreline is also pronounced as a steep coast , which was formed thousands of years ago by the surf of the then Litorina Sea , when the island cores Wittow and Jasmund were not yet connected by the Schaabe.

The bay is rich in fish and is also used for swimming, sailing, windsurfing and kite surfing . There are important ports in Ralswiek , Polchow, Breege and the Martinshafen in Sagard .
