Vyacheslav Leonidowitsch Glasytschew ( Russian Вячеслав Леонидович Глазычев ; born February 26, 1940 in Moscow ; † June 5, 2012 in Ko Chang ) was a Russian architect , art historian and publicist .

Life

Glazychev's father, Leonid Dmitrievich Glazychev, was a screenwriter and died on the Kalinin Front in 1942 . His mother, Militsa Nikolayevna Glazycheva, was a librarian at the Institute for Scientific Information in Social Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences .

After attending the No. 1 English School of the Moscow National Education Office, Glazychev studied at the Faculty of Industry - Architecture of the Moscow Architecture Institute . He worked as an interpreter at the World Festival of Youth and Students . 1961–1962 he studied in Warsaw . After completing his studies at the Moscow Architecture Institute in 1963, he planned railway and airmail systems until 1965 , then initially worked as an architect in the Planning Institute for Communication and then until 1967 as a research assistant in the All-Russian Research Institute for Technical Aesthetics .

From 1963, Glasytschew published essays on problems of design and artistic culture, especially in the journal Decorative Art . In 1964, together with EA Rosenblum, he founded the Central Experimental Studio of the Union of Artists of the USSR on the subject of environmental design, of which he became deputy artistic director in 1967.

In 1968, Glazychev became a candidate for the philosophical sciences with his dissertation Social Function of Design in the System of Contemporary Capitalism . In 1970 it became the book Über Design (with a second extended edition in 2006 with the title The Design as It Is ).

In 1969, Glazychev completed his training with the airborne troops as a first lieutenant .

1970–1984 Glazychev headed the social problems department of the Research Institute for Theory and History of Architecture and Urban Development and the corresponding department of the decorative arts magazine . In 1977 he wrote the book Organization of Planning in Architecture , in which he described the methods of interplay between social commission, planning and construction that had not been used in the USSR before. With the contents of the book, he wrote a dissertation for obtaining the degree of Doctor of Architecture with the title Architectural Creation and Organization of Planning in Architecture . Although the work was positively assessed by the director of the Central Research and Planning Institute for Housing Boris Rafailowitsch Rubanenko (1910–1985), the doctoral degree was not awarded due to an objection by the Central Committee of the CPSU due to incomplete research .

1984–1987, Glazychev headed the Department of Cultural Potential of Cities of the Russian Institute for Cultural Studies . He carried out empirical development programs in Tikhvin , Naberezhnye Chelny and Yelabuga in Tatarstan , organizing the interaction between the residents and the state power.

In 1986, Glazychev joined the Union of Architects of the USSR , and only months later he was elected to its secretariat. However, he resigned in 1988 when the Secretariat refused to accept the proposal to put him in charge of the Union's reform program.

In 1987 Glazychev was chairman of the organizing committee of the human rights organization Memorial . From 1988–1990 he was secretary in charge of the Kulturinitiative Foundation , the Russian sub-organization of the Open Society Foundations .

In 1989, Glazychev participated in the structuring of the European Academy for Urban Culture in Berlin , joined its board and became head of the Moscow department, which carried out programmatic and advisory tasks in Moscow, Myshkin , Staritsa and other cities in Russia. He participated in the preparation of laws on local government and culture.

In 1991, Glazychev received his doctorate in art history with his dissertation Cultural Potential of the Urban Environment and was appointed professor at the Moscow Architecture Institute.

In 1999, Glazychev ran for the office of Vice-Mayor of Moscow as a candidate for the Union of Right Forces . In 2005 he founded the Europa publishing house together with Gleb Olegowitsch Pawlowski and Modest Alexejewitsch Kolerow and became its general director. From 2005 to 2008 he took part in the analytical television program Realpolitik of the NTW under the pseudonym Mister Montblanc .

Glazychev has worked in the Russian Committee for Educational Development since 2001 and advocated educational reform ideas, in particular school autonomy and public participation in school administration.

In 2005, the Union of Designers of Russia opened the Russian National Design Academy , of which Glazychev became president. He also became a member of the Russian Social Chamber, founded in 2005 . Since the establishment of the Russian New Eurasia Foundation , a sub-organization of the Eurasia Foundation , he has been a member of the expert panel there.

On June 5, 2012, he died of a heart attack on the Thai island of Ko Chang while working on the strategy for Moscow's development by 2025 during a two-week stay .
