Vladimir Petrovich Tkachenko or Volodymyr Tkachenko ( Russian: Владимир Петрович Ткаченко ; born September 20, 1957 in Sochi , Russian SFSR ) is a former Soviet basketball player .

Tkachenko played for BK Budiwelnyk Kiev until 1982 and then moved to CSKA Moscow , where he stayed until 1989. At the end of his career he played one season in Guadalajara, Spain . With Moscow he was Soviet champion in 1983, 1984 and 1988 respectively.

With the national team of the USSR he won bronze at the Olympic Games in 1976 and 1980 ; at the 1982 World Cup he was world champion.

Athletic career

Tkachenko was the 1973 European Cadet Champion. In 1974 he finished fifth at the Junior European Championships, it was his only international tournament without a medal. In August 1976 he was second with the Soviet selection of the European Junior Championships behind Yugoslavia. In July 1976 Tkachenko competed with the Soviet national team at the Olympic Games in Montreal. The USSR team won their preliminary group ahead of the Canadians . In the semifinals, the Soviet team lost to the Yugoslavs , but was able to fight for the bronze medal with a 100-72 victory over Canada. Tkachenko scored 83 points in seven games. At the European Championships in Belgium in 1977, the Yugoslavs won the final with 74:61 against the USSR selection. Tkachenko scored 101 points in seven games, 16 of them in the final.

The following year the 1978 World Cup took place in Manila . The host Philippines and the defending champion from the Soviet Union qualified directly for the final round, with six teams joining them in the preliminary round. In the final round, the Yugoslavs won all games, against the Soviet Union the game ended 105: 92. The first two in the final round met again in the final and the Yugoslavs won 82:81 over the team from the USSR. Tkachenko scored 116 points in eight games, making it his team's top scorer. In the final he threw 14 points. The 1979 European Championship took place in Italy. The last three titles were won by the Yugoslavs, who this time were only third. In the final, the team from the USSR met Israel and won with 98:76. Tkachenko scored 121 points in eight games, 29 of them in the final. At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, the team from the USSR lost to the Yugoslavs and the Italians , who then met in the final. In the game for third place, the Soviet team defeated the Spaniards 117-94. Tkachenko scored 94 points in seven games.

At the European Championship in 1981 in Czechoslovakia, the team from the Soviet Union won all games, in the final they defeated the Yugoslavs with 84:67. Tkachenko threw 87 points in eight games. The following year the 1982 World Cup took place in Colombia . The Soviet team won all games in their preliminary group and lost in the final round only to the team from the United States with 93:99. In the final, the two teams met again as first place in the final round and now the team of the USSR won with 95:94. Tkachenko scored 97 points in eight games. In the two games against the United States, he scored four and eight points below average.

In 1983 at the European Championships in France, Tkachenko was not in the squad and in 1984 the Soviet team was qualified for the Olympic Games, but could not compete because of the Olympic boycott. At the European Championship in 1985 Tkachenko was there, the team of the USSR won the final against the team from Czechoslovakia with 120: 89th Tkachenko scored 40 points in six games. At the 1986 World Cup in Spain, the USSR team won 91-90 against Yugoslavia in the semifinals, and the United States won 87-85 against the Soviet selection in the final. Tkachenko threw 31 points in the first five games of the tournament and was then no longer used. The following year at the European Championships in Greece in 1987 , the Greek team won the final after extra time with 103: 101. Tkachenko scored 69 points in seven games, including 14 points in the final. In 1988 Tkachenko took part in the qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games, but not in the Olympic tournament in Seoul.

In 2015 Tkachenko was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame .
