Wolf-Eberhard Georg Felix von Lewinski (born June 2, 1927 in Berlin ; † March 23, 2003 in Calw ) was a German music and theater critic.

Life

Youth and Studies

Born as the son of bank director Ernst-Alfred von Lewinski , he contracted a heart disease as an air force helper after finishing school in 1944 , which led to his postponement from military service. That is why in autumn 1944 he was able to start studying music - with a focus on violin - which he expanded after the Second World War to include conducting training with Walther Meyer-Giesow , Hermann Abendroth and Joseph Keilberth, as well as studying the history of theater, literature and art.

Conductor and Artistic Director

In 1948 he appeared for the first time as a conductor in public and subsequently conducted a. a. the Philharmonic Orchestra Eisenach and the Dresden Philharmonic . Towards the end of his professional career, Lewinski was appointed director of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Philharmonic in Ludwigshafen .

Music critic and author

After 1949, Lewinski's work as a music critic became more important than his brief musical activity . After moving to Darmstadt in 1951, he initially wrote mainly for the Darmstädter Tagblatt , later also for Die Welt , the Süddeutsche Zeitung , Christ and Welt and Westermann's monthly magazine and wrote radio articles for various radio stations . Von Lewinski has worked for ZDF and Saarland Broadcasting since 1971 . As part of his long-standing collaboration with Peter Rocholl , the SR music director and long-time music coordinator of ARD , he produced widely acclaimed TV portraits of the pianists Claudio Arrau , Andor Foldes and Wilhelm Kempff as well as the vocal soloists Viorica Ursuleac , Elisabeth Schwarzkopf , Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau , Peter Schreier and Hans Hotter . In 1978 von Lewinski took over the position of chief music critic for the Rhein-Main newspaper group .

Teaching

In 1979 von Lewinski began teaching at the Musikhochschule Köln and Frankfurt am Main (together with Dr. Hoch's Conservatory) as head of the seminars "Music Criticism" and "Comparative Interpretation Studies". He gave courses in Hanover, Munich and at the "Herbsttage Iserlohn" and at the "Tage Alter Musik" in Innsbruck.

Wolf-Eberhard von Lewinski was married and had three daughters, some of whom also took up an artistic profession.
